Yes, "behaviouraly" all of our addictions started prior to the taking of substances. I read the question and decided to answer it as per what age did I start using substances to mask the real problems in my life... which in my case was age 10 to 14.
Perhaps the question coud be worded - "At what age did you start using substances / start self-mutilation / eating disorders / behavioral disorders?"
It really wold be great to get full feedback from you on this as we are opening a recovery centre for adolescents here in South Africa and this kind of informaiton would be of great value!
We did not choose to be this way, we were born this way.......................point being no matter when, how what we did the addict behaviour would always raise its head at some point, no matter the form it takes......
PS where in South Africa, im from Cape Town and would love to learn more.......

My addiction started when I was a senior in high school and shortly after graduation. Started as weekend stuff with the guys but I was alcoholic from the start.

I have to disagree. I think that our addiction started at a lot earlier age than that. When you were a kid did you ever go to the store with your parents and have to stand at the register and was told that you could have or could not have that candy? You could not wait to go again and try to get that next piece of candy. Sometimes being told that you could not have any, but yet you stared at it wanting it so bad that you could taste the candy in your mouth. Alcohol and drugs are the same way. When you first got clean did you still have those cravings. So you see the addiction started way before you may think. This is only something to think about. Only an opinion.

Sorry Michael.
